OLM Receives Challenge Kresge Grant

On December 17th Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach Services Inc., a local non-profit located on Johns Island, received notice that the organization has been approved to receive a Challenge Grant of $500,000 from The Kresge Foundation toward the new construction of the Wellness House.  Our Lady of Mercy Outreach began a Capital Campaign in March 2007 for the purpose of constructing a new “Wellness House” facility and endowing the on-going sustainability of the health programs.  The challenge grant is designed to assist non-profit organizations as they work to strengthen leadership and financial support for capital building projects.

The Kresge Foundation is a private foundation that supports communities by building the capacity of non-profit organizations in six fields: health, the environment, arts and culture, education, human services and community development.  Sebastian S. Kresge established the foundation.  In 2006, the foundation approved 230 grants throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa, totaling $152 million.

“We applaud your efforts to build paths of opportunity within your community,” says Rip Rapson, president of the Kresge Foundation.  “Ensuring the health and vitality of nonprofit organizations such as yours is central to building strong, vibrant communities.  We are proud to help advance your very important work.”

The capital expansion effort of the Outreach will allow for greater prenatal and women’s health services and dental care capacity.  During the fiscal year 2006-2007 the present modular trailer which serves as the Wellness House provided 1338 prenatal visits and 1556 dental procedures.  The new facility, scheduled for building in 2008, will allow for much needed space for increased health and education programs and services to the residents of the Sea Islands.
